Outdoor-Focused Education for K-8 Students.

Homer Forest School is Homer, Alaska’s first outdoor-centric public charter school. We envision a learning environment that prioritizes community-grounded projects and rigorous academics, while deepening our relationship to the natural world.

Our Story

In February 2022, a group of community members, made up of educators and families, submitted their official intent to apply to be a public charter school in the community of Homer, Alaska. After meeting with KPBSD district leaders, the group formed committees and worked together to submit an application in October of 2022.

From October-December 2022, members of our Charter Council worked with the KPBSD School Board to revise and finalize the Initial Charter School Application. The current timeline allows for our team to revisit the Local School Board in August 2023, with the hopes of opening school doors in Fall of 2024.

At HFS, nature is the classroom.
